California Expands Paid Family Leave Law


Effective July 1, 2014, the California Paid Family Leave (PFL) program is allowing employees to take time off to care for seriously ill grandparents, grandchildren, siblings and parents-in-laws. Currently, the PFL definition of “family” includes children, spouses / domestic partners, and parents.

Under the PFL program, employees who contribute to the State Disability Insurance (SDI) fund are entitled to six weeks of partial pay each year while taking time off from work to care for a family member.  Employees may receive up to 55% of their weekly pay up to a maximum weekly benefit amount. The benefit amount is determined by weekly pay in the base period.
